As a new initiative to move teaching and learning to the next level at the Winchester students were introduced to PBL (Project based Learning) that includes the elements of STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Art and Maths) This is an effort to instill in the students 21st century skills which includes Creativity and Innovation, Critical thinking and Problem solving Communication, Collaboration Use of technology, Digital Citizenship Flexibility and Adaptability, Initiative and Self-Direction, Leadership and Responsibility. During week 1 of STEAM based Projects, Year 2 students worked on making replicas of different habitats that includes 3D models, preparing posters and Power point presentations. On 8th and 9th of June Year 1 students visited Year 2. They were introduced to the structure and routines followed in Year 2. Students were given information about the daily schedule, new and exciting activities and how learning and teaching takes place in Year 2. A variety of activities from different subjects were planned which were cross linked to each other. Students were introduced to the topic habitats through an enriching story which not only includes the elements of a story but also detailed information about a habitat. Followed by a carousal of activities including Role play of the story about a habitat, research about animals and plants from a habitat, their adaptations and writing an information text about them, word problems based on different habitats, creating craft animals and plants found in a particular habitat and writing instructions to make those. Lastly students filled in the feedback forms to share their feelings about their visit to Year 2. The emphasis of transition day was to prepare students for a change they are going to come across and to better prepare them for the next academic year. Year 2 celebrated the Maths Day on 18th May having a variety of Mathematical activities based on Maths topics taught in the class. The students were enthusiastic and assisted their parents to carry out these amazing activities. They demonstrated their thorough comprehension of the various mathematical concepts, to their parents, through this event. It was an excellent platform for reinforcing their learning in a most engaging way. Maths Day was a day of fun and interactive learning aimed to develop and challenge the children’s skills in using and applying Maths in day to day life. This event enabled the parents to experience and enjoy Maths with the child and support in developing mathematical skills at home. The feedback received from the parents was extremely overwhelming and appreciable. On 12th May Year 2’s had a euphonious and sensational song competition. It was an excellent opportunity for the aspiring singers of year 2 to exhibit their singing skills. The students were filled with excitement and enthusiasm while singing some of the most popular songs of all time- including songs like Best day of my Life, Say Geronimo, Firework, Roar, Better when I am dancing, Let it go etc. The performances were well liked and cherished by the students as well as the teachers and judges. It was a memorably melodious experience for all. This term students were taken to Play! Town and the Dome Box for field trip. The trip was planned to link to current learning on Plants and community helpers which provided them an up-close educational and fun experience.
At Play! Town, students had an engaging and stimulating play experiences around the five world recognized brands: Barney, Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina, and Fireman Sam, along with live shows, to create long-lasting memories. This visit to play town stimulated students’ imagination and fantasy to facilitate the development of social, self-sufficiency, and adaptive skills as well as fostered interpersonal, team building, and problem-solving abilities. This was followed by the trip to Dome Box , a cinematic experience with a 360-degree dome screen where students viewed the award-winning animated movie The Life of Trees produced on the occasion of the UN International Year of Forests and a workshop to provide follow-up questions, interactive educational games, and demonstration based on the movie. It was very overwhelming to hear the little ones as they shared their experience with joy and excitement. With an aim to develop the listening skills and the vocabulary of the students in the most entertaining way, the story – “Big Red” was presented through an outstanding theatrical performance. This event was also intended to provide a sense of story structure and increase the curiosity about literature. Apart for that, this show had a subtle humanitarian message of helping others under all circumstances, even if it involved taking up risk. The students were amazed by the characters dressed in vibrant costumes and the attractive stage set up. They were totally engrossed in the dramatization, songs and puppetry, bringing the story to life with enthusiasm and creativity. The show was followed by a workshop to provide the students a platform to develop their dramatization skills by taking on roles of actual characters in the story and determine the ending, using their imagination. Keeping in view HH Sheikh Mohammed’s vision and the National Agenda, students of year 2 went for a reading field trip to the Creek park. They carried books of their choice to read and share with their peers. They thoroughly enjoyed reading books, enacting the story and hot seating. Later, they went for a nature walk to observe plants in connection with their learning in Science. The aim of this field trip was to nurture the love for reading among students.
The 17th of March was a day long awaited by the young ones of KS1. The FS area was buzzing with parents and the little ones all clad in their colourful pyjamas cuddling their fluffy soft toys.
The children were thrilled to watch the performance by confetti theatre. As an effort to develop the awareness on how to stay healthy KS1 students had an opportunity to experience a puppet show based on Health is Wealth. Through this play a beautiful message was conveyed to the students that Eat Healthy to stay Healthy. The event turned out to be star studded with the children dancing to the rhythm of foot tapping music along with the performers. Overall it was a memorable evening with a lot to cherish. The entire week, commencing from 7th February to 11th February 2016, was dedicated towards fostering healthy lifestyle routine among the students of year 2. Its relevance was unveiled through a variety of engaging activities, beautifully integrated in everyday lessons. For instance, some amazing posters were made by the students on the said topic, during the PSHCEE and ICT lessons. They also completed a data handling task based on sports activities, accurately, in the Maths lesson. A few more fun-filled learning included making 3D models of healthy food (fruits) during the Enrichment lesson, a public speaking session, a quick round of physical exercises and so on. This event also intended to up-hold one of the key elements (Health and Wellbeing) of the National Agenda constituted by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
As an effort to develop the awareness on how to stay safe on road, Year 2 students had an opportunity to experience a puppet show based on the road Safety rules. Through this medium of performing arts road safety rules like crossing the road, staying safe on no playing zones, be a safe pedestrian etc. were shared. Beside entertainment it was an effort to teach the important rules of road safety and make children responsible pedestrians as well as responsible passengers.
The pinnacle of the show was the dance performance by the characters from the puppet show which the children thoroughly relished. On 28th January Parents and students from the entire year group participated in this Humanities Week with great zeal and enthusiasm. Parents and students came dressed up in the national costumes of their countries. Parents from different nationalities like Egypt, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sudan, India, Lebanon etc imparted immense knowledge pertaining to their own countries, to the students, across the whole year group, in the most interesting and creative ways. This event was cross linked with the lingofest where parents shared greetings in their National languages as well as the performing Arts of their countries. It was a beautiful experience for the students, parents and teachers to witness the flavours of varied cultures under one roof, fostering global unity and peace.
Our school had its annual Fun Fair on 23rd January, 2016. Year 2 had exciting activities like: Bowling, Car race and Henna. Many who came to the Fun Fair, enjoyed trying their skills at knocking off the pins. Older boys were enthusiastic about competing the car race and girls queued-up for the Henna designs. It was an experience every one enjoyed.
Year 2 Math day, themed on World around us was conducted with admirable confidence, by its students on 21st January 2016. All the parents attending this event were amazed by the manner in which the students explained the various hands-on mathematical activities like skip counting, estimation, coordinates, arrays and so on. This platform of the students teaching their parents was highly appreciated by all the participants, who chose to offer their encouraging feedback not just verbally, but also through short videos, feedback forms and Padlet (online application).
â At Winchester we celebrated the "World Environment Day" to stimulate the awareness of the environment among the children, a day to promote caring for our planet, Earth. During the public speaking sessions students share their views on planting more trees, recycling, and ways to keep the environment clean and green. The enthusiasm with which the students of year 2 volunteered to work in this regard, was truly commendable.They brought a variety of plants to school and planted a garden as an effort to make the environment green and beautiful. The sports day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and energy by the students as well as teachers and parents of Year 2. It was certainly a fun-filled day, with numerous multi – skill based activities. The day began with a march pass by the students followed by an amusing performance by the cheerleaders. There were various exciting sporting games like-Obstacle Race,Filling the Bucket, Beanbag Toss etc. Not just the students, but even the parents and teachers had an opportunity to showcase their sportsmanship by participating in races. The event ended with WIND house as this year's winning team. At the end of the day, the students,teachers and parents thoroughly relished the event, proud of their achievements. The students received an opportunity to investigate, explore, play, and learn about the world which we live in. The students enjoyed the little expedition of minibees and the park also had an interesting area especially designed for children called, the Children’s City. It consisted of several exhibits and programs such as: Earth Science Gallery, Nature Center, Space Exploration, Human Body, Computer & Communication and Planetarium. The children explored the sections with great curiosity.
The Winchester school celebrated the 44th U.A.E National Day with great velour. The celebration was split into several events. Various activities were scheduled throughout the month in the class which the children enjoyed. The students of Year 2 made models of the desert with different items. Activities like public speaking sessions on the U.A.E and their home country, followed by a presentation on the U.A.E, the parade ,as well as a quiz that was conducted in the class which the students relished thoroughly. On the National Day,students and teachers dressed up in their national costumes, united in pride and passion for the U.A.E and waved the national flag. The whole school sung the National Anthem of U.A.E with great spirit. In celebration of the Universal Children's day, students of Year 2 created a mural on what makes them happy. They came up with lovely little wishes which delight them and they make them cherish.
In celebration of Dreams and aspirations week Year 2 students dressed up in the costume of their dream profession they aspire to be. They express their thoughts and feelings on why they wish to adopt a particular profession. The day was full of excitement, fun and learning. This event helped the children to showcase their career goals in the most vivid and vibrant way. They were determined to attain them with complete dedication and hard work. The eyes of the young professionals sparkled with joy, confidence and pride. It has been rightly said that “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Watch the Year 2 students sharing their views about their dream profession. E.P as always, is the much awaited lesson by the students in which enriching activities are planned to enhance students’ learning experience. This week in the E.P lesson, students worked on making cacti replica using bubble wraps and pipe cleaners. The project was linked to Desert Habitat, taught in Science. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. The cacti replica are still in process and will be completed next week in the E.P lesson. Year 2 had their Science day on 28th October, 2015. The activities were based on the topic Habitats. Parents along with their children had the opportunity to discover different habitats like ocean, desert, forest, arctic etc. with a quiz followed by other activities such as habitat games and building habitats. Finally parents were encouraged to sing a song on Habitats along with the scintillating scientists to further explore the world of different habitats. A memorable learning experience for all as science activities are always fun! Year 2 had their Pyjama party on Wednesday, 21st of October. It was a day long awaited by the young ones and had an encouraging turn out of children and parents. Children came in their colourful pyjamas along with cozy, stuffed toys. The teachers role played the story, "Money, Money, Money", which was a delight to watch by all. The children were excited and enthusiastic through out the play. The highlight of the show was the dance performance by the KS1 teachers on the song ''money money money''!!! accompanied by the elated students. Overall it was a memorable evening with a lot to cherish. At The Winchester we celebrated the Road safety week to build in students, the importance of staying safe on the road. Students were taken to the school buses. Bus drivers and the conductors discussed the rules of riding safely in the bus by following the safety rules. Students thoroughly enjoyed the session. In the PSHCEE lesson students discussed and shared their views on how to be safe on road. They also listed the road safety rules. Moreover in the ICT lesson, children had fun making road safety posters using MS Word. As a culmination to this week long campaign, students participated in the MUFTI DAY on Thursday, 22nd October by wearing non-uniform clothes and donating AED 10 towards ‘’Dubai Cares”. The “Dress code” for the day was colours of the Traffic light.
