World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21st, is a momentous occasion celebrated worldwide. Year 2 students celebrated Down syndrome day to show each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual with their personality, talents, and dreams. Celebrating Down Syndrome Day is an opportunity to celebrate their individuality and recognize the richness they bring to our lives. It's a chance to celebrate their laughter, love, and zest for life. It's about challenging stereotypes, breaking down barriers, and creating a world where individuals with Down syndrome can live their lives to the fullest. It's about creating a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, can thrive and be celebrated for who they are. During the day, students had a special colouring activity where students drew and coloured mismatched sock templates. These colourful creations around the school is a visual reminder of our commitment to inclusion and acceptance.
It was wonderful to see that the children of Year 2 enjoyed recreating artwork by famous artists! Engaging with art at a young age can foster creativity, appreciation for different styles, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Not only does it provide an avenue for self-expression, but it also allows them to learn about various artistic techniques and the stories behind the artworks. Encouraging such activities can have a lasting impact on their development and may even inspire future artists. Mathematics, the universal language of patterns and structures, is celebrated worldwide on International Mathematics Day. This day, observed on the 14th of March each year, pays homage to the diverse contributions of mathematics to human progress and understanding. Year 2 students participated in various math-related puzzles and lessons to celebrate this day and enhance their understanding of mathematics in a fun and engaging way.
World Poetry Day is celebrated annually on March 21st. It's a day designated by UNESCO to promote the reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry worldwide. Celebrating World Poetry Day in a year 2 classroom involved various activities such as reading and discussing poems, writing poems together as a class, or even reciting poems aloud. Teachers also introduced students to poets from different cultures and backgrounds to broaden their understanding and appreciation of poetry. The goal is to inspire creativity, linguistic skills, and cultural awareness through the beauty of poetry.
Year 2 students had an exciting day as they celebrated International Day of forest- recognizing that healthy forests will bring healthy people. Children were explained unbelievable benefits of forests, why forests are the lungs of the Earth. They discussed the pros and cons of deforestation and further gave valuable suggestions on how they can curtail it. Children made slogans/poems on how to save forests and shared it with their friends. Year 2 students participated in Humanities Week, centered around the theme of sustainability, aiming to educate, inspire, and involve individuals in a thoughtful exploration of sustainable practices, drawing upon the diverse insights offered by the humanities disciplines. Students dressed up to embody various jobs from the 17th century, such as, blacksmith, apothecary, rat-catcher, firefighter, and more. Students also discussed the sustainable materials used in home construction during the year 1666 The enthusiastic engagement of students and their parents was a delight to watch
Year 2 students took part in activities, which encouraged students to share their thoughts on saving planet Earth in their native language or any of the official UN languages such as French, Chinese, Arabic, Spanish or Russian. They have prepared with a poster which they translated and explain their thoughts to their peers in English.
Year 2 celebrated the Maths Day with immense excitement and enthusiasm. It was a great enriching experience for students with a lot of new learning. The mathematical activities were based on sustainability which were further linked to other mathematical concepts like collection of data, drawing bar graph, designing art pieces using symmetry using different shapes and role play of the sustainable products’ shop.
Wellbeing Week was joyful and full of enthusiasm for the students, because the activities kept them fully involved and helped them to realize how vital it is to pay attention to not only the people, places, and other living things around us, but also to our well-being. They perform number of activities like meditation to calm their mind, move to the beat of the music to enjoy the rhythm and free their body and mind, colouring a doodle to improve their attention span etc. Students wrote notes to friends, family, and teachers to express their gratitude and awareness for the well-being of those around them. On 29th November we celebrated The UAE national day at The Winchester school. Students were dressed up in the UAE’s flag colors to show their love towards the nation. Students got involved in different activities to understand the culture of the UAE. They expressed their views on the different traditions they follow here in the UAE and in their home country. Students enjoyed making traditional Emirati jewelry and virtual trip to the Dubai museum to know the past of UAE. A quiz was conducted to check their understanding on UAE. It was an enriching and entertaining day for everyone in school.
